web site languages
- HTML
- Organizes words and images that make up a web page's content.
A group of words becomes a list, paragraph or heading only because the HTML says it is so.
- XHTML
- The stricter, and therefore more universally reliable, cousin to HTML.
XHTML organizes words and images that make up a web page's content.
A group of words becomes a list, paragraph or heading only because the XHTML says it is so.
- CSS
- Where HTML or XHTML organizes the content of a web page, CSS creates the style.
A group of words becomes a red or bold only because the CSS says it is so.
- JavaScript
- A computer language. JavaScript can:
- Make images, buttons, and text change when you hover or click,
- Create pop-up menus,
- Determine the user's browser,
- Check that a form is properly filled-out,
- etc.
- Flash (or Adobe Flash, once called Macromedia Flash)
- Flash is a program, file and player for creating and playing animated and interactive web elements.
They can be fun, unique and, well, flashy.
On the downside, a web user requires the Flash player to view a Flash site or element.
Flash, however, has been around since 1996, and most computers already have it installed.
It can also create lengthy downloads and SEO problems.

A (possibly) helpful analogy:
- HTML and XHTML are nouns,
- CSS is an adjective, and
- JavaScript and Flash are verbs.
- World Wide Web Consortium (W3C)
- The main international standards organization for the World Wide Web.
- Accessibility
- The degree to which a web page is usable by as many people as possible. This is achieved by:
- XHTML for the pages content,
- CSS for the pages layout and style,
- Semantic Web Markup,
- Highly contrasting colors, or an alternate version of the web page with highly contrasting colors, for folks with low vision, and
- Alternative media or methods for video, flash, audio, and javaScript elements.
- Compliant
- Meets W3C standards for usability and accessibility.
- Validated
- A site that has been tested by W3C standards (and passed!)
